Futures Prop Evaluation: Hidden Constraints

Futures Prop Evaluation hides constraints that CFD programs do not have: micro and mini contract scaling, trailing end-of-day floors, limited payout paths and session rules. This guide explains each using official pages read on 2026-10-28 and shows how to size a futures strategy to them.

Dollar limits, not percentages

Futures programs state limits in dollars by account size. Topstep's Maximum Loss Limit is 2,000 dollars on 50K, 3,000 on 100K and 4,500 on 150K. The Trading Pit's Futures Prime uses the same drawdown figures and adds a daily pause of 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 dollars. As a share of the label these are 4%, 3% and 3%, much less than a static 10%.

Contract limits and the micro ratio

Maximum position size is capped by size. Topstep allows 5, 10 and 15 contracts, or 50, 100 and 150 micros, counting micros and minis at 10 to 1, and says you are never required to trade the maximum. The Trading Pit uses the same caps and adds that the lower your balance, the fewer contracts you can trade. Topstep notes that the ratio functionality is not currently available in the Live Funded Account. Size in contracts, not in dollars of notional.

Trailing floors

Topstep and The Trading Pit trail the floor with the end-of-day balance and lock it at the starting balance. Topstep checks it on real-time unrealized profit and loss, and The Trading Pit uses closed balance. See the guide on static versus trailing drawdown for the mechanics. A good week lifts the floor and leaves less room.

Session and overnight rules

The Trading Pit bans overnight and weekend positions and force-closes at 14:55 CT. Topstep describes a trading day from 5:00 PM CT to 3:10 PM CT and says payout requests are available during CME market hours, Sunday 5 PM CT to Friday 5 PM CT. Know the session clock for your instruments, because a position open at a cutoff may be closed for you.

Market data

The Trading Pit's support page notes that futures traders pay for market data, since pricing comes straight from the exchange in real time. Topstep's Combine page lists an FAQ on data subscriptions. A data fee is a recurring cost that belongs in the budget alongside the evaluation fee.

Payout paths and caps

Topstep's Express standard path needs five winning days of 150 dollars, with caps of 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000 dollars by size. Its consistency path needs three days and a 40% cap, with higher caps. Apex pays 100% of approved payouts, requires five qualifying days and a 50% consistency rule, and limits each account to six payouts. The payout comparison puts them side by side.

A sizing example

On a 50K account with a 2,000 dollar floor, a trader who risks 200 dollars per trade can take ten full losses in a row before the floor. A trader who risks 500 dollars takes four. If the daily pause is 1,000, five losses of 200 dollars stop trading for the day. Pick risk per trade so that a normal losing streak stays well inside both limits.

What to verify

The floor definition and measurement, contract caps for your size, session and overnight rules, data fees, payout path and caps, and any rule that differs between evaluation and funded stages. Keep dated copies.

A worked daily-pause example

On a 50K Futures Prime account the daily pause is 1,000 dollars. A trader takes three losses of 300 dollars and is at 900 dollars down. A fourth loss of 250 dollars reaches 1,150, and the system closes open positions and pauses trading until the next day. The firm warns that slippage can carry a loss beyond the pause, so the loss can be larger than planned. A trader who stops after two losses and waits for the next setup keeps room for the following day.

Choosing a size

Start at one contract or a handful of micros and scale up only after the log shows steady behavior. The contract cap is a maximum, not a target, and the lower your balance the fewer contracts you may use. Size so that the largest plausible adverse move in your holding time stays below a fraction of the daily limit.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Topstep contract limits?

5 contracts or 50 micros on 50K, 10 and 100 on 100K, and 15 and 150 on 150K, with micros and minis counted at a 10 to 1 ratio. You may always trade fewer.

Do futures prop firms charge for market data?

The Trading Pit's support page says futures traders pay for exchange market data. Topstep lists an FAQ on data subscriptions. Check the current price at checkout.

Can I hold futures positions overnight in an evaluation?

Not on The Trading Pit's Futures Prime, which force-closes at 14:55 CT. Check Topstep and Apex rules for your exact account.

How many losing trades can I take on a 50K futures account?

With a 2,000 dollar floor, ten losses of 200 dollars or four of 500 dollars. A daily pause such as 1,000 dollars at The Trading Pit limits the day further.

Why are futures payout caps small relative to the label?

Caps are set by size and path, for example 2,000 dollars on a 50K Topstep standard request. They reflect the small loss budget and the firm's payout design.
