What Counts as a Qualifying Trading Day?

What Counts as a Qualifying Trading Day? has no single answer, because trading days, winning days and profitable days are different counts. This guide compares the definitions read on official pages on 2026-10-28 and shows by example how the same week of trading can satisfy one rule and fail another.

Three kinds of day

A trading day is a day on which you did something, such as opening a trade. A winning day is a day with a profit above a threshold. A profitable day is a day with any profit. Rules use all three, sometimes in the same program, and they change the meaning of a minimum.

Trading days at FTMO and FundedNext

FTMO's 2-Step requires at least four trading days. A day counts when a position is opened between 00:00 and 23:59:59 Central European (Summer) Time. Opening is what counts, so a position held across several days counts only for the day it was opened. FundedNext requires trades on at least five separate calendar days per phase, with a minimum of one trade per day. Days need not be consecutive, and reaching the target early does not shorten the requirement.

Trading days at Topstep and The Trading Pit

Topstep's Express consistency path needs three trading days with at least one trade each. The Trading Pit's Futures Prime requires a trade on at least three unique trading days, and holding a position overnight does not count as a new trading day. In both, a day with a single trade counts, regardless of its result.

Winning days at Topstep and Apex

Topstep's standard Express path requires five winning days of at least 150 dollars net P&L. Days do not need to be consecutive, and a day locks in at 4:00 PM CT. The day on which you request a payout does not count toward the next five. Apex requires five trading days that each meet a minimum daily profit: 100 dollars on a 25K account, 250 on 50K, 300 on 100K and 350 on 150K. Only days that meet the minimum count, and there is no deadline.

A counting example

In a week a trader nets 120, 260, minus 90, 310 and 40 dollars on five days. On a 50K Apex account with a 250 minimum, two days qualify (260 and 310). On a Topstep standard path with a 150 minimum, also two days count. For a FundedNext five-day rule, all five days count because each had a trade. For a FTMO four-day rule, all five count if a position was opened each day. The same week gives two, two, five and five.

Edge cases with clocks

A day boundary can move a trade. Topstep's trading day runs from 5:00 PM CT to 3:10 PM CT the next day, and a request after 5:00 PM CT belongs to the next trading day. FTMO uses Central European (Summer) Time. If you trade across the boundary, check which day your trade belongs to before relying on a count.

Why it matters for planning

Day rules set a minimum calendar length. Five qualifying days at 250 dollars each need five sessions with at least that gain, and a quiet week delays payouts. Strategies that trade only on rare setups may struggle to log enough days. For payout paths that use these counts, see the payout comparison.

What to verify

Which kind of day the rule counts, the clock that defines it, whether days must be consecutive, whether the request day is excluded and whether the count resets after a payout. Topstep resets its count after each payout. Save the article and its date.

Planning a payout calendar

If you need five winning days of 150 dollars for a Topstep standard request, and your strategy makes such a day about half the time, you will need about ten sessions on average, which is two weeks. If it makes one about a third of the time, you need about fifteen. Counting your own history gives the expected wait. Put that wait into your cash plan before choosing between paths.

Choosing between day rules

A rule with a low profit threshold favors steady small gains, and a rule with only a trade requirement favors frequent but small risk. A trader with sparse setups prefers the latter. Read the thresholds against your own daily profit distribution.

Keep a day log

Record for every session whether a trade was opened, the net result and the time of the first fill. A simple table lets you see which day rules you meet and when a boundary moved a trade into another day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a trading day and a winning day?

A trading day counts any day on which you traded, such as opening a position. A winning day counts only days with profit above a threshold, such as Topstep's 150 dollars.

How many trading days does FTMO require?

At least four on the 2-Step path. A day counts when a position is opened between 00:00 and 23:59:59 Central European (Summer) Time.

Do qualifying days need to be consecutive?

No at the firms read. Topstep and Apex both state that days do not need to be consecutive.

Does holding a position overnight add a trading day?

At The Trading Pit, holding a position overnight does not count as a new trading day. At FTMO a day counts when a position is opened that day.

Does the payout request day count?

At Topstep, the trading day on which you request a payout does not count toward the next cycle's winning days.
