Prop Firms for Swing Traders Explained

Prop Firms for Swing Traders must be chosen by holding rules, not by targets. A strategy that holds for days meets overnight bans, weekend rules, inactivity limits, time limits and equity-based loss floors. This page compares what official pages read on 2026-10-28 state and marks the firms whose holding rules were not read.

What swing trading meets that day trading does not

A swing position sits through sessions, rollovers and weekends. It faces overnight bans, swap charges, gaps and news released while you are away. It also has a longer path to a profit target, so time limits and inactivity rules matter. A program can be fine for a day trader and unworkable for a swing trader on one rule alone.

Overnight and weekend rules

The Trading Pit bans overnight and weekend positions on Futures Prime and force-closes anything open at 14:55 CT, five minutes before the close. That rules out swing trading there. Alpha Capital allows weekend holds in Phase 1 and Phase 2 but not in the Qualified Analyst Account, so a swing method that passes the evaluation must change after qualifying. The5ers allows holding trades through news on all programs, though not executing orders in the two-minute window. The rules for FTMO, Topstep and Apex on overnight holds were not read for this update. Check them for the exact plan.

Equity floors and open trades

FTMO's daily floor is on equity, so a position that is deep in drawdown at the daily reset carries that loss into the next day's calculation. The5ers anchors its daily floor to the higher of the previous close balance or equity, so a profitable open position raises the level you must protect. In both cases a swing position's open profit and loss shape the next day's room. Alpha Capital's balance-based daily drawdown ignores open losses until they close, which suits swing positions better but can hide risk.

Swaps and gaps

Swaps and commissions are part of equity in FTMO's definition. A position held for a week on a high-swap pair pays seven nights, and the cost reduces the buffer. FundedNext lists a swap-free add-on, which changes the comparison but also adds a cost. Gaps over a weekend can pass through a stop. A 2% weekend gap against a position sized for a 1% stop produces a 2% loss, and on a 5% daily floor that uses 40% of the day in one move.

Time limits and inactivity

The Trading Pit has a 30-day challenge and a 21-day inactivity breach. The5ers has unlimited time but expires evaluation accounts after 30 inactive days and funded accounts after 60. FundedNext states no time limit. A swing trader who waits for setups for weeks can lose an account to inactivity even with no breach. Plan to place at least one valid trade inside each window and verify what counts as activity.

Minimum trading days and consistency

FTMO's 2-Step requires four trading days on which a position is opened. FundedNext requires five calendar days with a trade in each phase. A swing position held through several days counts only for the day it was opened at FTMO, so two long positions cannot meet a four-day rule. See qualifying days for how firms count a day.

News and event risk

Swing traders hold through scheduled events by design. The5ers permits it. Alpha Capital blocks closing inside its window, so a stop placed before the event is your only exit. FundedNext discounts profits for trades placed in its window, though a position opened earlier is not placed in it. See news event risk for slippage.

A swing trader's checklist

Confirm the overnight and weekend rule for your plan and stage. Count swap costs per night. Test your equity path including weekend gaps. Check the time limit and the inactivity rule. Compare these on the comparison hub before choosing.

A worked gap example

A swing trader holds a position over a weekend with a stop 1% away and a position size that risks 1% of the account at the stop. A gap of 3% against the position, with the stop filled at the gap, costs 3% of the account. On a 5% daily floor that is 60% of the day in one fill, and on a 4% futures floor it is most of the room. Size positions so that a plausible gap, not only the stop distance, stays inside half the budget.

Choosing between programs

Rank programs for a swing trader by holding rule first, then loss-floor definition, then inactivity and time limits, and only then by target. A program with a ban on overnight holds is out whatever its price. See the effective risk budget page for turning the floor into a position size.

Reading the fine print on holds

Check whether a rule applies to the evaluation, to the funded stage or to both, since Alpha Capital changes its weekend rule after qualification. Ask what counts as an overnight position, because a firm may judge it at the session close, at a server midnight or at a fixed time such as 14:55 CT. Keep the reply and the date.

Frequently asked questions

Which prop firms allow swing trading?

It depends on the program. The Trading Pit bans overnight positions on Futures Prime. Alpha Capital allows weekend holds in its evaluation phases but not in the qualified account. The5ers allows holding through news. Check each plan.

Can I hold trades over the weekend at Alpha Capital?

In Phase 1 and Phase 2, yes. In the Qualified Analyst Account, no.

Do swaps count against the prop firm drawdown?

At FTMO, equity includes swaps and commissions, so yes. Check other firms' definitions for your plan.

Can an inactive prop account expire?

Yes. The5ers expires evaluation accounts after 30 inactive days and funded accounts after 60, and The Trading Pit treats 21 days without a trade as a breach on Futures Prime.

Does a long position count as several trading days?

At FTMO, a trading day counts when a position is opened that day. A position held across days counts for the day it was opened.
