Prop Firm Challenge True Costs Explained

Prop Firm Challenge True Costs depend on more than the price on the checkout button. This page compares the cost items that official pages read on 2026-10-28 state for several firms, shows how to total them over several attempts, and marks every cost that was not read.

What counts as cost

The sticker price is one line. A fair total adds the evaluation fee, every reset you expect, subscriptions that continue while you trade, activation fees, add-ons, market data, payout fees and any currency or gateway charges. A refund promise reduces the total only if you reach the payout that triggers it, so it should not be netted against the cost until that happens.

One-time fee or subscription

FundedNext lists a one-time challenge price by account size, with approximate prices of 59.99 dollars for 6,000, 299.99 for 50,000 and 999.99 for 200,000. Topstep sells its Combine as a subscription, so cost grows with the months you take to pass. A strategy that needs six weeks to reach a target pays more on a subscription than on a one-time fee for the same period. The Trading Pit uses a 30-day challenge on Futures Prime, with resets that keep the remaining days. That structure puts a clock on the cost: a reset five days in leaves 25 days.

Resets and attempts

Most traders do not pass on the first attempt. The second table multiplies a single price by the number of attempts to show the effect. Three attempts at 299.99 dollars cost 899.97 dollars before add-ons. If your replay of the rules shows a high chance of breach, price at least two attempts, not one. FundedNext states that a reset is available for Stellar 2-Step but not after you hold a funded account, and the reset behaves differently in each phase. The Trading Pit sells resets as many times as you wish. Compare the reset policy as carefully as the entry price.

Add-ons change the comparison

FundedNext lists swap-free, a lifetime 95% share, no minimum trading days on small sizes, a 150% reward refund, a bi-weekly reward, EA and VPS options and a double-up. Each one changes either cost or terms. Comparing a base price at one firm with an add-on bundle at another is not a fair test. Price the same features across firms or none.

Payout-side costs

Topstep states a 30 dollar fee on ACH and wire payouts, no Topstep fee on Aeropay or Wise, and gives a worked example: a 500 dollar ACH request returns 420 dollars after the 10% split and the fee. FundedNext says the trader covers any transfer gateway charges. These costs reduce small payouts by a larger share, so a firm with a low minimum request can still cost a lot per withdrawal.

Refundable fees

FundedNext describes the challenge price as a refundable fee that can be requested with the first reward from the funded account. A refund depends on getting there, so before that point the money is spent. Treat any refund as a conditional credit and see the guide on challenge fee refunds for the reading checklist.

A simple cost model

Write expected attempts times fee, plus expected months times subscription, plus add-ons, plus data, plus payout fees. Estimate expected attempts from a replay of your trades against the rules, not from marketing. Then compare it with the realistic payout under the firm's caps, which the payout comparison tabulates. If expected cost exceeds what you can reach in payouts, the program does not fit.

Verify before paying

Open the current checkout and read the invoice lines before you pay. Confirm the rule version tied to the price and keep a screenshot. See how to budget fees and resets for a worksheet approach.

Cost per dollar of reachable payout

A useful single figure is expected total cost divided by the payout you can reach in the first period. If a 50K account costs 300 dollars and its first payout is capped at 1,500 dollars, the ratio is 0.2, before attempts and fees. If two attempts are likely, the ratio doubles. Compare this ratio across firms using the caps in the payout comparison, and remember that caps rise with later payouts at some firms, so use the figure for the period you actually plan to trade.

Where costs hide

Costs hide in recurring lines. A subscription renews every month you stay in the Combine, a data feed renews on its own schedule and an add-on may need repurchase after a reset. Read the receipt after your first purchase and set a reminder to cancel anything you no longer need.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a prop firm challenge really cost?

The fee on the checkout page is one part. Add resets you expect, subscriptions, activation fees, add-ons, market data and payout fees. Multiply by the attempts your own trade replay suggests, not by one.

Does Topstep charge a monthly fee?

Topstep sells the Trading Combine as a subscription according to its Help Center. The price was not read here, so check the current checkout page and the subscription article.

Does The Trading Pit charge an activation fee?

Accounts created on or after 2026-03-26 have no activation fee. Existing accounts and reset breached accounts may be subject to one before moving to the Earning Phase.

Are challenge fees refundable?

FundedNext describes the fee as refundable with the first reward from a funded account. Refunds depend on reaching that stage, so count the fee as spent until then.

What are the payout fees at Topstep?

ACH and wire payouts carry a 30 dollar fee. Aeropay and Wise carry no Topstep fee, though banks or the services may charge their own fees.
